Cutting edge bundle implementation

The project involved developing a custom solution for an extensive catalog of 20,000+ products, of which over 4,000 products were complex bundle configurations. These bundles featured a main primary item, such as a guitar, complemented by up to 10 additional components (headphones, cables, speakers, etc.) with the option to upgrade individual components.

To allow maximum flexibility for customers to customize their bundles, we built a custom solution using Shopify’s new Cart Transform API. Not only does this allow the merchant team to easily manage and update bundles in bulk, such as switching out a sold-out component for an alternative across hundreds of unique bundles, with dynamic pricing updates; but in addition, this approach provides a holistic presentation of bundles to customers giving them the ability swap out individual items, and see the real-time prices and savings associated. The built-in logic splits the bundle product out into it’s relevant component items in checkout, aiding both warehouse fulfillment and financial tracking.

Leveraging the power of metaobjects

There was a requirement to solve for a diverse product catalog with more than 12 different stock states, such as preorders, backorders, special order, drop ship and more. The complexity escalated when dealing with bundled items, requiring unique rules and messaging. To address this, a streamlined system using Shopify metaobjects was implemented via a customized solution that utilized preorders.
